Regional Carbon Initiative

Sustainable Waterloo Region’s Regional Carbon Initiative (RCI) facilitates voluntary target-setting and reductions of carbon emissions in organizations across Waterloo Region. Members of the Regional Carbon Initiative plug-in to a community of support, linking like-minded organizations focused on implementing successful and cost-effective projects that result in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions.

Regional Carbon Initiative Member Services

Sustainable Waterloo Region provides organizations with the networks, resources, and expertise necessary to achieve GHG emission reductions. The Regional Carbon Initiative core service offering includes:

• A carbon accounting tool and support for measuring and reporting carbon emission reductions
• A jam-packed event season that includes quarterly Educational Forums and Technical Workshops, as well as monthly Peer-to-Peer Networking Sessions and ad-hoc Member Hosted Learning Sessions
• Resources that connect members to the information and people necessary to achieve reductions, including the GHG Services Directory, and custom created documents prioritized based on member requests, such as our Green Team Guide and a Directory of Sustainable Initiatives.
• MemberLink, the Regional Carbon Initiative online community that centralizes all Sustainable Waterloo tools and services and includes a forum for member discussions
• Credible third-party recognition of members’ advancements toward environmentally sustainable operations through our year-end report, annual Evening of Recognition, ad-hoc media connections for members making notable reduction efforts, and the Sustainable Waterloo Region website.

With a focus on GHG reduction commitments, the Regional Carbon Initiative is designed to help organizations direct their sustainability strategies towards reducing GHG emissions against a defined baseline. It is this measurable action that we focus on when publicly recognizing and celebrating members’ advancements towards more sustainable operations.
